Design Process

Getting Started

The starting point is getting to know you, an opportunity to understand your vision for the garden.

Are you imagining a secluded relaxed space? Or maybe outdoor play for children with room for grownups to entertain too?

Whatever you imagine, together we will collaborate to make your garden dreams a reality. By asking lots of questions and getting to know you, a written client brief stating what you require and how you need it to function is produced.

A visual mood board is also created to build a picture of the atmosphere and feel you want to achieve for the garden.

Measuring Up

Understanding your garden space is central to the new design. The site is measured either by me or on larger sites a surveyor is commissioned.

The survey also records the position of existing trees, utilities, changes in levels and structures.

A site analysis considers the soil type, the character of the place, positive features, wind direction, how the light moves, views to be enhanced or minimised are all noted.

I also take lots of photographs to bring your site to life when I am back in my studio.

Developing the Design

Now its time to get creative. This initially takes the form of sketches in plan and perspective.

As the design evolves you are involved to ensure you like the shape the design is taking. This is also an opportunity to introduce you to materials, features, pots or furniture which may interest you to blend with the design and bring the garden to life.

From all this the master plan is created which sets out the final design. The planting plan and plant choices are created, along with the package of plans and written specification are provided for the landscape contractor.

This all together forms your final design.

Making it Happen

The hard landscaping of your new garden can be realised by a tried and trusted team that either I have collaborated with before or a company you trust.

Regular site monitoring meetings and communications throughout the build by myself are the best way to ensure the design masterplan is being followed with issues being resolved promptly.

Plant setting out is usually undertaken by me. This involves the plants being checked for quality, positioned on the new borders as stated in the planting plan.

Using my understanding of the design, I consider their final location to make sure they are in just the right spot to honour the design, frame views and bring the atmosphere of you new garden to life.

Enjoying Your New Garden

Its now time to raise a glass and relax into your new garden…

A well-maintained garden continues to grow with you and your family, bringing endless pleasure year after year.

If required trusted local gardeners can work with us to make regular monitoring visits, providing your new planting with everything it requires to flourish and grow.
