A hidden gem
A hidden gem
As keen gardeners my clients were looking forward to retirement with the opportunity to enjoy being in the garden much more. However, their garden just wasn’t working for them. The space felt small, flat and overlooked by neighbours to both sides. Most of their garden time was spent under the glass veranda on the terrace outside their house. Furthermore, an intrusive mesh fence had been erected on the rear boundary which was spoiling the garden’s best asset, its hill and sky views out.
I was invited to create an immersive plant filled garden that would be easy to tend. They wanted to enjoy being in the whole garden, with places to sit and enjoy a cuppa. A shed needed to be incorporated into the design. Most importantly, the impact of the fence had to be minimised, while keeping the wonderful views.
The space was divided with screens and planting to create relaxed areas which feel secluded from neighbours, offering places and moments to by enjoyed throughout the garden. Vertical planting of scented climbers lifts the eye over the mesh fence and to the views beyond. As the planted boundaries blur into the space and view, the garden now feels more generous. Strong structural evergreens blend with exuberant relaxed planting softening the urban setting and merging into the landscape to the rear of the garden.
From its summer scented roses to its intriguing hidden corners. This plant filled garden has a sense of mystery, journey and with beautiful framed views out has become a haven to be enjoyed every day.
