As the Indian summer slips into autumn, a slowing pace envelopes our gardens. It's easy to become disengaged with our outdoor spaces, closing the door until springtime. This is a missed chance to embrace nature and the ebb and flow of the seasons. Enjoying our gardens has been shown to improve our mood and health all year round. So now is a great opportunity to get on top of gardening tasks and feel good too! It's refreshing after the floral fireworks of summer to slow the pace outdoors as our gardens drift into slumber.

Here are a few ways to continue cherishing our precious green and cherishing ourselves a little more too...

The nights draw in and so do we. It's important to keep venturing outside. Keep expectations low. Say to yourself “I’m just having ten minutes in the garden, see how thing are looking” Then before you know it, you are outside and enjoying living in the moment.

Consider having a small backdoor tool bag near you coat and boots. Just a few essentials to help you dash outside when the moment takes you.

Bring joy everyday until late spring with a couple of containers planted for winter interest. Include a few bulbs to delight you in springtime. Importantly, place them by a path or door used everyday. A satisfying task that is guaranteed to to lift the whole family’s mood through the winter and beyond.

No longer rushing again the surge of summer growth, we can slow into a gentle rhythm of gardening. Take your time. A few minutes a few times a week can make a huge difference.

Embrace your slow gardening, savour the moment. Enjoy watching the garden, whether its low sunlight glowing over a borders or even dew on a cobweb. Finally pick the last of the roses and other brave flowers to enjoy indoors with a well earned cuppa.
